Short History of Tekirdağ

Tekirdağ has a settlement of approximately 6,000 years. The places settled in prehistoric and posthistorical ages have been identified. Tekirdağ faced the Russian occupation in the 93 War (1878), the Bulgarian occupation in the Balkan War (1912) and the Greek occupation after the First World War (1920-1922). The city was liberated from occupations and permanently joined the Turkish territory on November 13, 1922, after the victory of the Turkish War of Independence. The city was named as Bisanthe, Rhaedestus, Rodosto, Rodosçuk and Tekfurdağı in the historical process. Finally, it was named Tekirdağ after the proclamation of the Republic.
