Special Athletes Down Athletics National Team Becomes World Champion

According to the statement made by the Special Athletes Sports Federation of Turkey, the competitions in the athletics branch of the World Athletics, Table Tennis and Tennis Championships for People with Down Syndrome have come to an end.

National athletes won a total of 30 medals, with 10 gold, silver and bronze. Collecting 254 points with these medals, Turkey became the world champion in team athletics. Italy ranked second, Poland third, Portugal fourth and Mexico fifth.

National athlete Emrah Akcakoca also won 5 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals in the championship, becoming the Turkish athlete who won the most medals in a world championship. Emrah made history with the world record he broke in the 100 meters as well as medals.

Birol Aydin, President of Turkey Special Athletes Sports Federation, stated that they achieved a historical success.

“Our special athletes are making history, the whole world is applauding us. Turkish athletes became the new holders of two world records in the championship. I congratulate Emirhan Akcakoca and Dilara Cevik, who broke the world record and made us feel proud and joyful. The medals we won in the championship show that when all our special athletes are given the opportunity.” They showed the world what they’ve accomplished.”

Birol Aydin thanked President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Minister of Youth and Sports Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoglu and those who contributed to their efforts.
