‘Sea Pencil’ Spotted in Izmit Bay

A ‘sea pen’ creature, one of the soft coral species, was seen during the dive in the Gulf of Izmit.

A sea pencil creature was found during the dive in the Gulf of Izmit.

Underwater cinematographer Tahsin Ceylan dived at Ulaşlı in the Gölcük district of the Gulf of Izmit. With the knowledge of the Ulaşlı Fisheries Association, Ceylan dived from the point 500 meters off the Ulaşlı port in Değirmendere Mahallesi.

Ceylan photographed soft coral sea pencil s during the dive, which was carried out with the support of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Environmental Protection and Control Department and Değirmendere Underwater Sports Club.

HOME MANY LIVES

The reef (underwater surface structures formed in shallow areas) starting at 25 meters and exceeding 50 meters in the region is home to many living things.

Tahsin Ceylan, speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), said that it is an extraordinary record that the corrals exhibited at different points of Marmara create a large population at these depths.

Ceylan stated that the extreme density of analytes, which host underwater creatures during diving, was also recorded in the region, adding: “Ulaşlı Fisheries Association is making efforts to promote the region and make it the new address of diving tourism. I hope a diving school will be opened here and this region will work for more diving tourism. it will help,” he said.

Diving instructor Murat Kulakaç stated that it was an exciting discovery in the Gulf of Izmit and said, “The reefs we are accustomed to seeing in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas have an incredible view and an incredible life, starting from 25 meters to 50 meters. You have the chance to see all kinds of soft corals. The presence of such reefs in the Gulf of Izmit is an excellent situation for both angling and diving tourism,” he said.
