Sanliurfa Archeology Museum Takes Its Visitors Back 12 Thousand Years
Taking its visitors back 12 thousand years, Şanlıurfa Archeology Museum welcomes more and more visitors every year.
Şanlıurfa Archeology Museum, where unique works that shed light on the history of humanity, hosted approximately 300 thousand people in 2022, reaching the highest number of visitors since the day it was opened.
The museum, which was opened to visitors in 2015 by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and has an area of 60 thousand square meters, 30 thousand of which is closed, is exhibited in the ongoing excavations in many parts of the city such as Göbeklitepe. Karahantepe, which sheds light on the Neolithic period and is described as the “zero point of history”.
Visitors to the Archaeological Museum, where hundreds of human and animal figures, cemeteries and inscriptions carved into the stones are found, also offer the opportunity to see the 180-centimeter-long “Balıklıgöl statue”, known as the “world’s first carved sculpture”. true size” and dates back to 9,500 BC.
Şanlıurfa Archeology Museum Director Celal Uludağ told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the museum, whose foundation was laid in 2012, was opened to visitors in 2015 by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Explaining that the works in the museum evoke the feeling of ‘living in that period’ with visual animations belonging to the period they belong to in chronological order, Uludağ said, “There are approximately 200 thousand works in our museum. In 2022, our museum broke the visitor record and reached 300 thousand visitors.
