Revolution in Electric Cars: A Battery That Doesn’t Lose Its Charging Capacity Has Been Discovered

Scientists have discovered a way to make a new generation of batteries for electric cars that don’t lose any capacity even after hundreds of charge cycles. The new method could revolutionize.

Electric cars are considered our best option to replace traditional cars with a more environmentally friendly alternative. However, electric cars and other electric vehicles are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which are not enough in terms of both durability and cost. However, this is about to change.

An international research team from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia and the National University of Yokohama in Japan has discovered a method of making next-generation solid-state batteries that do not lose any capacity even after hundreds of charge cycles.

While conventional lithium-ion batteries contain a liquid electrolyte into which lithium ions flow during the charge/discharge process, solid-state batteries use completely solid materials. As these batteries do not emit toxic liquids when punctured, in addition to a major improvement in operational safety, solid-state batteries can also be charged much faster.

Solid State Batteries Will Be Revolutionary

However, there was an unresolved problem that limited the durability of solid-state batteries, although they were considered revolutionary until now. When lithium ions were added to or removed from the electrodes of the battery, the crystal structure of the material changed, causing the electrode to expand or contract. So it was basically a durability issue, until now.

Scientists have discovered a new type of positive electrode material with unprecedented stability in solid-state batteries. Thanks to this material, which consists of optimized lithium titanate and lithium vanadium dioxide, the durability problem of solid state batteries is solved.

No Loss of Capacity

In the tests carried out on the solid state battery with the addition of the new material, it was revealed that after 400 charging cycles, the battery did not lose its current 300 mAh capacity.

Scientists “The absence of capacity reduction over 400 cycles clearly demonstrates the superior performance of this material compared to what has been reported for conventional all-solid-state cells with layered materials. This finding can significantly reduce battery costs. The development of practical high-performance solid-state batteries, advanced electric vehicles It can pave the way for its emergence,” he said.

Scientists “The development of long-lasting and high-performance solid-state batteries could solve some of the fundamental problems of electric vehicles,” says Yabuuchi. According to the research team, charging will take less than 5 minutes once full testing is complete and the product enters electric cars.

It is predicted that solid-state batteries will replace lithium-ion batteries, which have reached their peak in terms of performance, and will eventually become the industry standard. Solid-state batteries could also be the key to a greener future. On the other hand, it is also useful not to consider the use of these batteries only on the basis of automobiles.
