Protected Bald Ibis Were Not Affected By The Earthquake

After the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes that occurred in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, it was determined that there was no problem in the bald ibis, which were taken under protection at the production station in the Birecik district of Şanlıurfa.

Bald ibis Breeding Station was established in 1977 in Birecik district of Şanlıurfa in order to protect and reproduce baldibis, which is in danger of extinction. The number of bald ibis has been increased every year with the studies carried out at the station, which has 2 adults and 9 baby baldibis. At the station, bald ibis are fed a special menu of lean ground beef, boiled eggs, grated carrots, chicken feed and unsalted cheese.

It was determined that there was no problem caused by the earthquake in 294 bald ibises released to their natural habitats on the banks of the Euphrates on February 14, when the breeding season started.

Onur Inan, Director of the Nature Conservation and National Parks Şanlıurfa Branch of the 3rd Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, said that there were 294 bald ibises at their stations. Pointing out that baldibis are seen as the herald of spring and a symbol of fertility in the region, İnan said, “We release baldibis into their natural habitat on February 14 every year. This year, we expect 30 to 50 puppies.”
