In the first quarter of this year, a total of 17 million 776 thousand 793 passengers traveled to Istanbul airports on domestic and international routes. The passenger traffic, which greatly decreased throughout the world and in Turkey during the Kovid-19 epidemic, accelerated the recovery process in the first 3 months of 2022. Turkish civil aviation, which started to overcome its negative impact with the measures taken last year, continued to increase in air traffic and passenger density in 2022. In the first three months of this year, there was a significant increase in the number of passengers at Istanbul and Sabiha Gokcen airports compared to the same period of the previous year.
The passenger increase at Istanbul Airport, which was used by 5 million 542 thousand 158 people in the same period of last year, was calculated as 106 percent compared to the previous year. Accordingly, the number of passengers increased by 5 million 872 thousand 72.
International Passengers Increased by 162 Percent in Sabiha Gokcen
In the January-March period of 2022, 3 million 236 thousand 915 passengers on domestic lines and 3 million 125 thousand 648 passengers on international lines traveled to Sabiha Gokcen Airport. During the said period, a total of 6 million 362 thousand 563 passengers flew from the airport. In the first quarter of last year, the airport hosted a total of 4 million 210 thousand 495 passengers, 3 million 17 thousand 447 domestic and 1 million 193 thousand 48 international passengers. In the first quarter of this year, the number of passengers increased by 219 thousand 468 in domestic lines and 1 million 932 thousand 600 in international lines compared to the same period of 2021. The number of international passengers increased by 7 percent and 162 percent. In the first quarter of this year, a total of 17 million 776 thousand 793 passengers traveled from Istanbul airports, including 6 million 160 thousand 418 domestic and 11 million 616 thousand 375 international passengers. In the same period of last year, the total number of passengers was determined as 9 million 752 thousand 653.
The Number of Flights Also Increased
Parallel to the number of passengers in the first quarter of this year, the increase in flights at Istanbul airports was also reflected in the statistics. In the January-March period of 2022, 20,985 domestic and 60,891 international flights were organized at Istanbul Airport. In the first quarter of the year, 81 thousand 876 flights were made at this airport. It was determined that the flight was carried out. At the airport, where 46 thousand 427 flights were carried out in the first three months of last year, an increase of 35 thousand 449 flights was observed compared to the same period of this year. In the first quarter of this year, a total of 44 thousand 177 flights were made at Sabiha Gokcen Airport. Of these flights, 21 thousand 568 were domestic flights and 22 thousand 609 international flights. In the same period of last year, a total of 32 thousand 102 flights were carried out at Sabiha Gokcen Airport. In the first quarter of this year, an increase of 12 thousand 75 times compared to the same period of the previous year was calculated. In the same period, it was recorded that a total of 6 thousand 612 flights were carried out at Atatürk Airport, 2 thousand 931 on domestic lines and 3 thousand 681 on international lines.
