Mahsa Amini Protest from Iranian National Archer Parmida Ghasemi! She Takes Off Her Hijab
While the protests that started after the death of a young woman in Iran after she was detained “on the grounds that she did not comply with the headscarf rules” continued at some points, Parmida Ghasemi, one of Iran’s national archers, also supported the protests. She took off her headscarf at an official awards ceremony in Tehran and received the award and continued without a headscarf.
Footage posted on social media showed a female athlete removing her headscarf at the medal ceremony after the Persian Gulf Cup archery competition in Tehran.
In the footage, it was seen that some of the audience in the ceremony area supported him and applauded as Ghasemi, who was standing on a podium for the award ceremony with the other ranked athletes, took off his headscarf.
Protests in Iran and acts of support for demonstrators from famous names
The death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who fell into a coma and was hospitalized on September 13 in Tehran after being detained by the Irshad patrols, known as the “morality police,” on the grounds that she “did not comply with the headscarf rules”, died on September 16, sparking protests against the country’s government.
Although there are statements from official sources that civilians and security forces died in the incidents, there is no clear information about the number of deaths.
Norway-based Iranian Human Rights Organization, on the other hand, announced last week that 304 people were killed in the demonstrations. According to the news reflected in the Iranian media, more than 40 security guards lost their lives during the demonstrations.
The protests in the country are supported by many famous names, from artists in the country to athletes in different sports.
Iranian rock climbing athlete Elnaz Rekabi also competed without a headscarf in the final of the Asian Rock Climbing Championship held in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, on October 16. Rekabi had stated that it was “unintentional” that she did not wear a headscarf after the match. Despite this, Iranian athlete Rekabi, whose headscarf-less competition was interpreted as supporting the protests in the country, was greeted by a large crowd on his return to the country.
Lastly, the world-famous Iranian actress Terane Alidusti also supported the protests by posting a photo of her without a headscarf on social media.
