Iznik is a district of Bursa province and the city that is the center of the district. It is located on the eastern shore of Lake Iznik, in the northeast of Bursa, named after the city. According to TÜİK data for the year 2020, its population is 43,531 people. The name Iznik comes from the old name of the city “Nikea”. According to a common conversion rule in the period, the name of Isnikea was changed to Iznik in Turkish, with the suffix of ‘is’ before the Greek name. It is thought that the first settlement in Iznik dates back to 2500 BC. The settlement established here before the 7th century BC was called ‘Helikare’. The area of the district is 753 km² and its altitude is 85 meters. It is located in the northeast of Bursa province, in the east of Iznik Lake. Bursa city center is 76 km away. It is located in the Southern Marmara part of the Marmara Region. The Marmara climate is mild in the region. It was administratively attached to Bursa in 1930.
