Short History of Karaman

Although the first date of foundation of the city of Karaman is not known, as a result of the archaeological excavations, documents showing that it was an important settlement area, trade and cultural center. It has been revealed that Karaman and its surroundings had settled settlements around 8000 BC. Karaman region has hosted many civilizations such as Hittites, Lydians, Phrygians and Romans. The city took its name from the Karamanoğulları Principality and served as a capital for a certain period. The city was a district of Konya until 1989. After 1989, Karaman became a province.
