Short History of Kahramanmaraş

Kahramanmaraş and its surroundings have a long history from prehistoric times to the present day. There are traces of ancient era in Tekir Valley, Caves in Döngel Village and in Elbistan, Pazarcık and Türkoğlu districts. The first settlements in the region started in the Paleolithic Age. It is known that the first civilization in the region belongs to the Hittites (2000-1200 BC). A short time later, the Gurgum Kingdom was annexed by the Assyrians. Later, Meds, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Seljuks, Mamluks, Dulkadiroğulları and Ottomans conquered the city. The city known as “Germenicia” during the Roman period; It is strategically important, easy to access to environmental civilizations, it is the transition region of trade and economy. The city, which witnessed Arab raids for a while, was conquered by the Seljuk State in 1086. However, the Maras lands changed hands between the Seljuks, Byzantines, Crusaders and Danisments. Then the city came under the sovereignty of İlhanlı and Memlük state. The Dulkadiroğlu Principality was established in the region in 1337 and became one of the most powerful principalities in Anatolia. The city was incorporated into Ottoman lands by Yavuz Sultan Selim in 1515 and became a state affiliated to the Ottoman State in 1531.

After World War I, Kahramanmaraş was occupied by the British first and then the French in 1919. The local resistance that started on January 21, 1920 forced the French to withdraw from the city. Maraş became the first city to save itself in the Turkish War of Independence by winning its independence on February 12, 1920. Maraş has become a symbol of national spirit and national resistance. The city was honored by the Turkish Grand National Assembly with the “Red Stripe Independence Medal” on April 5, 1925. Again, due to these achievements, the city was honored with the title of “Hero” on February 7, 1973. Thus, the name of the city became Kahramanmaraş.
