Japanese Earthquake Expert Shinji: One of the World’s Biggest Land Earthquakes in Turkey

Professor Shinji Toda, a Japanese earthquake expert, said that the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes are among the biggest earthquakes that occurred on land in the world.

Shinji, Professor of the International Research Institute of Disaster Science at Tohoku University, spoke to Japan’s Asahi Shimbun newspaper about the earthquakes of 7.7 and 7.6 magnitudes affecting 10 cities in total, based in Kahramanmaras in Turkey.

Shinji stated that the tremors in Turkey were among the largest earthquakes to occur on land in the world. “It was an unexpectedly large earthquake.” used the phrase.

Pointing out that the East Anatolian Fault Line is located on the border between the Arabian Plate and the Anatolian Plate, Shinji noted that “in addition to the magnitude of the earthquake, the proximity of the epicenter to the surface also caused great damage.”

Shinji stressed that the “energy amount” of the earthquake was “more than ten times that of the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake.”
