“I Don’t Want to Wear the LGBT Flag!”

National player Orkun Kökçü, who plays for the Feyenoord team of the Netherlands, announced that he will not wear the captain’s band with LGBT colors for religious reasons. Awaiting understanding from the fans after this decision, Orkun said, “I believe everyone is free to do what they want or feel.”

Orkun Kökçü, the rising talent of Feyenoord, became the agenda in the Netherlands. Dutch fans reacted to Orkun, who announced that he would not wear the captain’s band belonging to LGBT colors.

“DUE TO MY RELIGIOUS BELIEF…”

Orkun Kökçü: “I believe that everyone is free to do whatever they want or feel. I know very well the importance of this move, but due to my religious belief, I don’t feel like I am the right person to do it. That’s why I don’t feel comfortable wearing this captain’s band.”

“HOPE THIS DECISION IS RESPECTED”

Orkun Kökçü: “I guess that some people might be disappointed with me about this. This is definitely not my intention. I hope that this decision that I made for religious reasons will be respected, even though I know that my words will not immediately remove this feeling.”

WHAT IS LGBT?

LGBT or GLBT or LGBTQ+ emerged in the 1990s after the abbreviation LGB, and from the mid-to-late 1980s the word gay began to represent the LGBT community. Many activists have switched to using the LGBT community, seeing the use of the gay community as an incomplete definition.
