Hungary Delays Approval of Sweden and Finland to Join NATO

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced that the necessary parliamentary approval for Sweden and Finland’s NATO membership will be obtained in the first session in 2023.

In a statement to reporters, Orban stated that Hungary supports the NATO membership of both countries and said: “Hungary supports the NATO memberships of Finland and Sweden, and the parliament will consider it in the first session of next year.”

The first session of the Hungarian Parliament in 2023 is scheduled to convene in February.

Hungarian government officials stated in their previous statements that the parliamentary approval required for Sweden and Finland’s NATO membership would be obtained in 2022.
