Gun Attack On Synagogue In Tunisia: 3 Dead 9 Wounded

An armed attack was organized against the Garibe Synagogue on Djerba Island in Tunisia. In the incident, 3 people lost their lives and 9 people were injured.

Tunisian Ministry of Interior made a statement on the armed attack in Djerba Island.

“After the attacker killed a colleague to obtain ammunition for the attack, the attacker was moving to reach the Garibe Synagogue when security forces intervened and 3 people, including 2 visitors and a police officer, were killed in the clash that broke out as a result of the intervention of security forces,” the statement said, adding that the attacker was a security guard.

The statement said that the attacker who clashed with the police was killed and 9 wounded people, including 5 members of the security forces, were taken to the surrounding hospitals.

Pilgrimage activities were underway at the Garibe Synagogue, which is visited by thousands of people during the Jewish pilgrimage season.

Jews On Djerba Island

The island of Djerba, which was home to various civilizations such as Greek and Roman, has a surface area of approximately 500 square kilometers and has 366 mosques and masjids as well as Africa’s oldest synagogue.

On the island, which bears the traces of various civilizations, there are masjids and historical towers built underground by Muslims against the dangers coming from the sea.

The majority of the 160 thousand inhabitants are Muslims, while around 1200 Tunisian Jews live on the island.
