Short History of Gümüşhane

The city established in the region during the Roman and Byzantine periods was called Argyropolis. The main reasons for the wars in the region are that it is on a historical trade route and is famous for its mines. After the Battle of Malazgirt in 1071, the region came under the Seljuk Sovereignty, and finally, in 1467, the Akkoyuns dominated the region. In 1461, when Fatih Sultan Mehmet ended the Trabzon Greek Empire, Ottoman influence began to be seen in the region. Gümüşhane came under Ottoman rule after the conquest of Trabzon Greek Empire and this domination lasted from 1461 to 1467. After this date, Gümüşhane came under the rule of Akkoyunlu State. This domination ended in 1473 with the battle of Otluk beli between Fatih and Uzun Hasan. In 1514, Yavuz Sultan Selim was definitely taken over and joined the Ottoman lands. With the establishing of Republic of Turkey, Gümüşhane became a province.
