Great discovery in the rainforest! Joeologists mesmerized by the unfolding landscape
Exploring underground in the rainforests of northern Guatemala, geologists have found an underground Mayan city with lasers.
Geologists in northern Guatemala have discovered a massive 2,000-year-old Maya site. The discovered area covers 650 square miles in the Mirador-Calakmul Karst Basin region and includes about 1,000 urban settlements connected by 160 km of gorges that the Maya probably traversed on foot.
THEY FOUND THE REMAINS OF THE PYRAMID
Along with their findings, the researchers found the remains of several large platforms and pyramids, as well as channels and reservoirs used to collect water, according to a study recently published in the journal Ancient Mesoamerica.
FOUND WITH LIGHT DETECTION SYSTEM
The findings came from an aerial survey that researchers conducted by plane using light sensing and range, including one from the Universidad de San Carlos in Guatemala. Using this method, lasers are irradiated and the reflected light is used to create an aerial view of a landscape.
