Short History of Gaziantep

It is known that people have lived in Gaziantep since the Paleolithic period. It became a permanent settlement after the Bronze Age. In the next period, the city developed very fast as it was located on the Silk Road. The city under the rule of Babylon passed into the hands of the Hittites in 1700 BC. After the Hittites, it was ruled by Egyptians, Meds, Assyrians and Persians respectively. In the 6th century BC, the city was under the rule of Macedonian, Selevkos and Komagene civilizations. Later, it passed into the hands of Rome, Byzantium, Seljuks, Eyyubis and Mamluks. Gaziantep was conquered by the Ottomans in 1516 and remained on the borders of Arab, Aleppo and Dulkadir states until 1818. As of this date, it was reconnected to the state of Aleppo as an Ottoman sanjak.

After World War I, Gaziantep was occupied by the British first and then the French in 1919. Local people showed an epic resistance against the occupation of Gaziantep under the leadership of Şahin Bey. Despite this, the people of Gaziantep surrender on February 9, 1921. The French troops evacuated the city in accordance with the Ankara Agreement on December 25, 1921. Gaziantep won the metropolitan title in 1987. Gaziantep was awarded the Independence Medal by the Turkish Grand National Assembly in 2008, due to the bravery shown by the people of Gaziantep in the Turkish War of Independence.
