Extramarital Sex is Prohibited In Indonesia!

Indonesia’s parliament has banned extramarital sex in the country. The sentence for those caught was increased from nine months to one year.

A series of changes followed the rise of religious conservatism in the predominantly Muslim country. Under the law, unmarried couples could face up to one year in prison for engaging in sexual intercourse. It applies equally to foreigners and locals living in Indonesia or visiting resorts such as Bali.

LAW INCLUDES ANY NON-MARRIAGE RELATIONSHIP

Before the ratification of this new penal code, premarital sex was already prohibited, but the law was not generally enforced. While the old law defined adultery as sex between a married man and one without a wife, the new law outlaws all forms of extramarital affairs, including unmarried couples. The sentences of those who were caught were also increased from nine months to one year.

INTERPRETING TOURISM AS A BIG BLOCK

Supporters of the new law say the changes were made to address critics’ concerns. Critics see the law as a “catastrophic” for human rights and a potential blow to tourism and investment.
