The latest report of the European Union (EU) on forest fires in Europe, shared with the public today, revealed the disaster caused by the forest fire in Turkey in the summer of 2021. When the years of 2011 and 2020 are taken in Turkey, it is seen that 9 thousand hectares of forest were burned annually and this amount increased to 139 thousand hectares in 2021.
While the forest fires, which first started in the Manavgat district of Antalya at the end of July 2021 and then spread to many regions, could not be extinguished for a long time, there were criticisms that the extinguishing planes were insufficient in responding to the fires.
There were 2793 forest fires last year
The EU Joint Research Center published its 2021 report on forest fires today, with data from 34 European countries.
According to the chart on page 11 of the report, the annual average number of fires in Turkey between 2011 and 2020 was 2631, while the number of fires in 2021 was 2793, an increase below the average.
Although the number of fires did not increase much, the report reveals the high increase in burned areas with figures. Accordingly, a total of 9095 hectares of land was burned in Turkey between 2011 and 2020, and the total area burned in 2021 was 139,505 hectares.
According to the report, Turkey is the most burned and most affected by fires in Europe in 2021. Turkey is followed by Italy. In the report, which was prepared with official data from Turkey, it is stated that 91 percent of the fires in Turkey are caused by human activities.
