US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director Bill Burns and Russian Foreign Intelligence Service Director Sergey Naryshkin held a meeting in Ankara.
The White House National Security Council official said that US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director Bill Burns and Russian Foreign Intelligence Service Director Sergey Naryshkin met in Turkey. During the meeting held in Ankara, nuclear risk and US citizens detained in Russia were discussed. Emphasizing that Burns “did not conduct any negotiations”, the official said, “He is not discussing the resolution of the war in Ukraine. It sends a message about the consequences of Russia’s use of nuclear weapons and the risks to strategic stability. It will also bring forward the cases of U.S. citizens who have been unjustly detained.”
Adding that the US had informed Ukraine about the meeting before Burns’ visit, the official said, “We are firmly committed to our fundamental principle; we will not discuss anything about Ukraine without Ukraine.”
The meeting in Ankara was the first known high-level contact between the US and Russia since the Russian attacks on Ukraine on February 24.
