Boycotted on Social Media; Netflix Donates 6 Million Liras

“So far, we have delivered 6 million TL of donations to charities through our partners in the industry,” Netflix said in a statement.

Netflix, the digital entertainment platform with millions of subscribers in Turkey, released a statement after it was complained about being insensitive during the earthquake.

Earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6, centered in Kahramanmaras, shocked Turkey. While national mourning has been declared throughout the country, search and rescue efforts continue in earthquake areas.

Since the first moments of the earthquake, many brands have mobilized for the victims, either through financial aid or by providing moral support to the earthquake area.

On the other hand, companies expressed their condolences to those who lost their lives in the earthquake, wishing that they had passed to Turkey with their social media posts.

In this process, Netflix, which has thousands of subscribers in Turkey, did not share a condolence message regarding the earthquake disaster, which drew reaction on social media, and #NetflixBoykot hashtags on Twitter entered Turkey’s agenda. In addition, dozens of writers called for a ‘boycott’ in Ekşi Sözlük.

Announcing that “6 million TL of aid has been collected so far”, Netfilix made the following statements in a statement on social media:

“We share the deep sadness and pain caused by the disaster in our country, and we have been working as a team for support from the first moment. We use all our energy for aid to reach disaster areas. We have donated 6 million TL to aid organizations through our partners in the sector so far.

In addition, our company continues to support the personal donations of our employees all over the world by adding two more proofs. We are still at the very beginning of the road. Together we will continue to work to heal the wounds of this great disaster. We wish our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and a speedy recovery to our wounds.”
