People in Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, had to queue for water after Russian missiles hit key energy facilities across the country yesterday. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said that 40 percent of the people in the capital are dehydrated and 270,000 houses have no electricity. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the attacks were in retaliation for the weekend’s attack on Russia’s Black Sea fleet.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine announced that 13 people were injured in the attacks across the country.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a statement last night, asked Ukrainians to reduce their already “extremely frugal” electricity consumption.
LONG QUEUES CREATED THROUGHOUT THE CITY
Then, in Kiev, street lights were turned off and trolleybuses were replaced by traditional buses. Long queues formed throughout the city as Ukrainians lined up to refill water from the fountains.
Zelensky also added that Russia does not have missiles that will destroy “Ukraine‘s will to live”.
Yesterday, in addition to Kiev, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv and Zaporizhia were targeted by missiles. Overall, Ukrainian authorities said that 18 facilities in 10 regions, mostly energy-producing, were hit by missiles and UAVs.
THE ATTACKS WERE MADE FOR REPEAT
On the other hand, yesterday’s attacks came after Russia blamed Ukraine for the drone attack on the Black Sea Fleet on the annexed Crimean peninsula over the weekend. Putin confirmed that the attacks were partly aimed at retaliation.
In addition, the new wave of attacks was the last example of Russia’s strategy in Ukraine. It has previously been suggested that Russia is trying to destroy important energy infrastructures in Ukraine before the winter months when temperatures can drop to -20C.
Ukraine said it was in response to Russia’s military defeats, as its army recaptured territory in a successful counterattack.
RUSSIA SUSPENDS GRAIN CORRIDOR AGREEMENT
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that at the weekend Ukraine carried out an attack on Russian warships and civilian ships in Sevastopol in the annexed Crimea.
“Considering the terrorist act, the Russian side suspended its participation in the implementation of agreements on the exit of agricultural products from Ukrainian ports,” the ministry said in a statement.
