Police Chief Yoon said in a press release that about 156 people were killed, most in their 20s, and 30 were seriously injured in what he called South Korea’s deadliest disaster in the past eight years. Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon burst into tears as he apologized for the stampede in a press release today. Local media stated that more than 100,000 people were on the streets at the time of the incident.
